2000 Jeep XJ Cherokee Turn signal problem. Sign In

This ones got me baffled. 2000 Jeep (XJ)(Small) Cherokee.

I turn on the right turn signal, I get right front and right rear, just as it should be. I turn on the left turn signal, I get left front, left rear... AND right rear. It doesn't make sense.

My first thought was a short in the wiring between left rear and right rear... except that a sort should work the other way too, also getting right rear when I should have left rear. PLUS, I've gone over the wiring diagrams and don't see any place where should a short could theoretically be occurring.

Any ideas?

The problem is likely a bad turn signal switch.

To confirm unplug the connector from the turn signal switch. With ignition on take a jumper and jump between red/white pin 5 to dark green/red pin 9. This will cause the left rear turn lamp to illuminate. Check for power on brown/red pin 3. If you don't have power, jumper red/white pin 5 to light green/white pin 10. This will cause the left front turn signal and marker lamp to illuminate. Check for power on brown/red pin 3. If you don't have power, replace the switch.

If you have power on brown/red pin 3 anytime during those two test, you have short in the wiring.
