Right in the middle of the dashboard, directly in between in the speedometer and the RPM. I have an indicator that lights up. It looks like a red battery, with a + - sign. I thought it was my battery that needs changing, but after looking in my Intrepid book, it says its a voltage problem. What do you think it is, the alternator, the battery...my battery is not that old. I can run a bit, an then the light pops back on. So the battery is OK to start, but after a while on the road, I thought this would be an indication the system is not charging well, so the alternator is at fault. But I'm not a mechanic. Any help will much appreciated, thanks.

Stephane; Yes, the battery lamp is telling you that there is a problem with the charging system. An alternator must put out amperage as well as voltage. The voltage should be 13.6-14.6V. If it is putting out too much, or not enough, the light will illuminate. If too little, the battery may go dead. If too much, will fry the battery. Also, a bad battery can cause the alternator to overcharge. Both need to be checked. There is a diode in the alternator that controls the lamp. Most shops can check the battery, alternator, and diodes. Loren SW Washington
