He had battery trouble so bought a new battery. Lost charge, figured it was alternator. Bought alternator, lost charge. Called me said why is this happening? I Checked it out...seemed like faulty ignition switch. I read a partial short to ground on the fused battery circuit in the engine compartment. All other circuits fine. So I wrongly assumed it was the ignition switch and advised him to buy that. History and experience failed me and his wallet there. Studied ground fault more and seems to lead to guage cluster and heater(but heater has motor windings that will show a partial resistance reading to ground). I did not check exciter voltage supplied to alternator which I have discovered thru researching this prob. This alt has one wire on the connector(not the battery + output post). I did determine, however, the alternator actually works when battery + post disconnected(15 volts). The shunting to ground is sufficent to make the alt squeal which is something I've never heard before and its not the belt. Trust me. This dude's truck is ruining my reputation to fix vehicles. I can only say in my defense that in this rare occasion I am working without a manual. I did see a diagram of a similar model's charging circuit and noticed a resistor in parallel with the voltmeter. Does that ring any bells? Am I getting warm? PirateCrazyUnsure
