2000 Chrysler LHS electrical short? draining battery Sign In

2000 LHS, 6cyl, 3.5L with 108,000 miles. I am the 3rd owner, my sister and my mom were the first two owners. Several times over the past year I have had some sort of electrical problem. The lights will occasionally flicker off and on even when parked in the driveway with no key in the ignition.

Once last Summer, I noticed that the overhead temp control display was reading oddly...mumbo jumbo that you could not deciper, I took it to the shop that I have used many times. I was told they could not find anything wrong but wiring shorts are hard to track down and to bring it in right away if it happened again or if they found it in their lot, they would know I had it towed in and why.

The power drivers seat will sometimes move back when I shut the car off, sometimes it won't. Sometimes the odometer will stay lit up after I shut the car off and take the keys out but when I get out and shut the door, it goes off. The lights have not flickered for quite some time nor has the temp display been reading oddly but the battery has been dead three times over the last month and I bought a new battery last year.

I am getting a new (used) car this week and I have a co-worker ready to buy this car but I will not sell it without knowing what is wrong with it and getting it fixed first. It's a nice car in better than average condition, has had reg. maintenance, new a/c last Summer and new heating element in drivers seat Winter 2010. The only problem we have not fixed other than this issue is the pass. door lock does unlock the door but the button doesn't come up so you have to reach over and do it manually (not a big deal for me and over $250 to fix). I cared more about the heated seat and a/c repairs.

I did look thru the service records and found my sister had had the headlamp/light switch replaced in 2006 (I got the car in 2009).

Thanks,
kjh

I'd look closely for problems in the Body Control Module. You need a professional scan tool to access it and a professional level service information provider like Alldata to give you the test procedure. This would be one that may be beyond the scope of a DIY to repair unless some of the other guys have a trick up their sleeve on this one.

I didn't figure it would be a do it yourself repair, I just wanted some idea before I took it to the dealer and paid their labor rates for repair. I don't want to be told it needs $$$$$ worth of repair when it's not really necessary.

Autozone codes were #15 (over-voltage) and #10 (valve power feed malfunction). Neither does me much good but if I get same info from dealer then I'll pay to have it fixed before selling it. Same as if it's a body control module (at least I know what that is now).

If, on the other hand, they tell me it needs way more than that, I'll have to park it and let it sit until someone wants to buy it "as is".

You don't have to go to the dealer, just a well equipped shop. Their labor rates are competitive but realize they have to cover costs. I have a scanner that could help me diagnose your issue, but it cost me $4000 to buy it. Alldata is a few hundred PER MONTH to have it. I appluade your integrity to not sell something with issues. Its rare not to see someone pawn it off on the next guy. But the guys you have taken it to may be good guys and just not equipped to tackle this. They've admitted such to you and not hosed you by throwing parts at it. They've wanted a confirmed issue. You may need someone beyond their scope of equipment to pin this down. Let us know how this works out for you and what is found.

Thank you for your help Nick. We've been on the receiving end of buying someone else's problems, I won't do that to anyone else. We could keep it and pass it on to one of the kids (last one got her license just last week but already bought a car last year) and then I wouldn't have the extra cash to buy my newer car.
A co-worker wants it but we will have figure it out and fix it first. I had even forgotten about the problem as it hadn't acted up for awhile but with the dead battery 3 times in Feb., I know something's not right and it's most likely the issue it had before so we'll see what we can do before we sell it.
Since we live in a small town I use the most recommended shop from when we moved here in 2008. They've fixed alot of stuff for us, always fair in pricing and quick to get it done but like you said, they may not have the needed scanner. I'll try the next larger town over and see what I can find out before I go to the dealer.

Let us know what you come up with. If your local guy has always been fair with you I'd keep bringing your work to them. They at least admit when something is over their head and its nice to have a familiar face to trust in. Not being fully equipped is different from incompetant and they have been upfront with you. I'd bring the regular things to them and let them decide when they have something over their head, as they seem willing to admit that.

Asked for the shop to check all belts, hoses, fluids, wires, etc and told them about the two codes showing up. Nothing! No charge either so I'm not out any money but still concerned "somethings not right". Only thing I know now is to be upfront and tell her "I don't know and neither does either of the shops. If you want it fine, if you don't, we'll sell it as is to someone else once we tell them the same."

Thanks for you help anyway.
