2000 Chevy Silverdo 2500, A/C starts blowing heat Sign In

Hey gents,

First post for me, hopefully you'll start hearing more from me too. I actually run a computer repair company, but I've been getting calls for auto repair... Heck if it turns a profit, I'll do it!

Just wanted to know if anyone's heard of a common issue here. Here's the truck stats:

2000 Chevy Silverado 2500
6.0L V8
125K miles
Dual Climate Control

It is a construction vehicle, it has been used quite a bit. Here in Montana, the air is very thin, summers are largely mild and winters are sometimes heavy with temps getting to -30F.

As for the issues... It is simple. When driving along with the A/C on, it will suddenly start blowing hot air. No noises, no real indication it's coming. Two ways to fix it as I've found -- Jamming the driver's side climate rail up and down will fix it sometimes, albeit not the smartest thing in the world to do. The other way is to shut the truck down and start it back up.

I was thinking it could be a relay or actuator. Any ideas gents? Anyone know if this issue? It does seem to be a bit common in these Chevy's, not as common as, say, Ford's Cruise Control issue, but common nonetheless.

Thanks gents!

-Philip.

Let me understand this. You are in the computer business by trade but now you have decided to be a auto technician for hire? Unbelievable!

You'd better start by buying some tools, starting with A/C gauges and determine what the pressures are when this thing goes hot.

Lol not quite, but I can see where you'd get that! This is actually one of my regular clients, he wanted me to check it out for him. I've gotten several other calls that I've turned down thusfar :).

I did have my neighbor who's been an ASE mechanic for 30 years hook up his A/C gauge and check the temps and pressure, he said they looked fine. Unfortunately he works mostly on Germans, so he doesn't know some of the oddities of Chevy's.

P.S. Would you take $5 for that Vette? No I'm kidding, sweet car though! Thanks for the reply!

-Philip.

Your going to have to do some testing but it can only be done when the problem is present. Try pinching off one of the heater hoses and see if the temp cools down. If it does, then you likely have a problem with the blend door or actuator under the dash.
