2000 Chevy Malibu key will not fully lock when turning off ignition Sign In

When the key is turned to "off" position, the theft system light stays on as well as the little PRNDL light on dash. I can apply a slight pressure to the key while in the cylinder and all goes off. I have replaced the ignition switch and had the key cylinder looked at by a locksmith. The locksmith fixed a thin metal strip on the outside of the cylinder and made new keys. All worked well for about a week and then the key began to hang up a bit when trying to remove it. Now the darn little lights come on and I have to disconnect battery cable. Teenager had trouble with getting key out and without asking for help, jiggled and twisted til key came out. What do I do next? New key cylinder? Unsure

Indications point to a bad ignition lock cylinder but it should still be checked out before assuming that.

What else can I check? The original problem a month ago was that the radio, wipers, clock, theft light and small dash light stayed on when key was in "off" position. Replaced ignition and worked on cylinder plus new keys. Everything turned off and worked great for a week and then teenager couldn't get key out. Had her give the steering wheel a tug and keys came out. After that the 2 lights stay on but radio, wipers, clock go off. Could it be the Park Lock on the console shift?

I have looked around for new cylinder and see that it comes with new PassLock sensor. Can I just use the key cylinder? If used, will a new sensor mess up the computer settings and/or theft system?

No, it has to have the sensor. You're going to have to do a Passlock relearn after changing the lock anyway. You can do that yourself.

If your teenager has a big heavy buch of crap on the keyring I'd get that taken care of. No ignition cylinder likes that and these were especially weak so no dangly crap or it will go out again.

Probably wouldn't hurt to make sure the park lock cable is functioning correctly as you stated. You'll probably have to pull the center console out to get to the shifter assembly to inspect the park lock cable. If it is goofed up, you'll have a tough time getting the ignition switch into the lock position to pull the key out.

I found the original chevy key and tried it in the key cylinder. Didn't work at first and then it just clicked totally OFF. All lights went off. Unfortunately, I could only repeat this final "lock 2 out of 5 tries. The key turns to just before the final Lock position, thus leaving some lights on, jiggle it some and it might click into that final Lock position. I'm thinking bad cylinder. What do I look for in a bad park lock cable? I am only a novice here and appreciate all your help.

The shifter assembly pulls the cable that goes to the ignition switch to allow the ignition to rotate to the off position when the gear selector is in the park position. You'll have to visually inspect the cable to be sure it is operating and adjusted correctly.
