My cion?heck engine light was on for a couple of weeks, couldnt check codes. Everything seemed fine, all fluids okay too. It overheated, started running rough, wife said it died whe she pulled into work.
I added water/coolant (it was fine a few weeks ago,no leaks either)....changed the thermostat. Noticed the temp gauge had went way past hot and stayed......and it wont go back. It is not stuck, when you turn on the key..it moves a little farther to the right. How do i fix that, is that common? Yes, i tapped on the gauge and dash...no help.
It still is running a litte rough. I do have a small exhaust leak by manifold. I checked the codes today, and it said there was a high read at the coolant sensor....... there is/was a random misfire on a cylinder....there is a random misfire on 3...and something about the cam and crank(coralation? or something)...timing between the two i think'
Anyway, any idea on how to fix the temp gauge issue...clusters are like $180..and im unemployed right now.
How do i get a random misfire? I pulled it, the plug is firing...

Rather hard to decipher your question(s)?
The temp gauge with the ignition off; does it drop down to the cold?
When you turn the ignition on; does it jump up to the hot right away or only after the engine has ran for a bit?
Misfires are not only caused by an ignition (spark or spark plug) problem. Just guessing; but loss of coolant, with no visible external leaks; possibly an intake gasket, leaking coolant into the cylinder(s)?

sorry..The gauge stays up , even after it has sat overnight. It is beyond the 240 or 260(?) "hot" temp number. When you turn the key on...it moves a little...but to the right farther. Could an over heat actually screw up the gauge to where it wont drop back?
Like I was saying, I had a check engine light for a few weeks..didn't see anything. Wife drove it, it overheated. I added fluid and changed the thermostat (in the walmart parking lot..cold,cold,cold) I drove it, it drives okay...but it is a little rough sounding, I just thought maybe the small exhaust leak I have on the drivers side exhaust pipe was causing the rough idle in the winter weather. That is when I noticed the gauge acting up, and not dropping. I think I have more than one problem now.
I added more coolant and water, it seems to keep taking water....and there is no water in the oil or on the ground. I have to admit what you said is concerning me now. Maybe I developed a intake gasket leak, losing water into the cylinders...which could have caused a overheating...which could have led to screwing up my gauge....
Does this sound possible? Is there a way to check the intake gasket without pulling everything off? Of course the code reader didnt say anything about leaking intake gasket...

As for the overheating buggering the gauge; I guess it could happen, because the stepper motor that moves the needle has maybe never been there before and is now stuck.
Check with an automotive electronics shop; places that a garage would take things like radios and other electronic for repairs. They maybe able to repair the instrument cluster.
As for the loss of coolant; with the use of a cooling system pressure tester; they should be able to find the leak. There are other tell tail signs as in the colour of the spark plug; they’ll have a grayish/white looking ash if they are getting hit with anti freeze.

The code reader said "300" random misfires in cylinders and "303" which is random misfires in 3rd cylinder. I took some advice, pulled the 3rd cylinder plug out (didn't do a cold test becuase i actually just had to use the truck to take kids to late start school)....with the plug left out, i cranked it a few, and then actually started it and let it run for a minute. There was obvious wetness all around the plug hole and kinda blown outward onto other parts. It wasnt gas either. I'm guessing I do have a intake gasket leak...ouch.

Just to add: If this is the Vortec 5.7 they eat intake gaskets for lunch!

Tom.
The only thing about our blown intake gasket theory; there are no water jackets around #3 cylinder's intake port; we may be looking at a head gasket?

but if the head was blown you could get coolent in the oil. now anouther question is when was the last time you got the coolent changed? cause if the dca was too low you could have gottin ice in the engine and messed up a lot more thin just a gasket. also i am not an expert on thes engines but dont thay have an egr valve or two that have coolen going in to them. i know in a cummins you can loose an egr valve and start getting a miss.also dont thoes engines hae direct port injection. and dont the injectors have copper cooling sleeves in the head???? and a way to check for that is to see if there is eather fuel in the coolent or coolent in the fuel. if so that is anouther place to look. also look at the wireing for your temp sensor all the way to the fire wall and see if there is any damageand check the injector harness for damage too.check the tail pipe for wetness and/or while running look for white smoke that would tell you if you r burring water.

A note on head gaskets:

They can leak anything they seal, add exhaust to cooling system or a # of things including an unseen leak between two cylinders and leak no fluids at all,

Re: 1999 suburban temp gauge wont go down Sign In

true but if a head is leaking coolent it will only go 2 places one in out the pipe and the outher is the oil cause with a lose of "coolent" that is the only places with out going out of the head and if you had a head leaking coolent wouldent you get air bubbels in the coolent and the coolent would smell of exhaust. a test you could do is a compression test on the cylinder to vearify that the head is leaking and a pressor test on the cooling system and see if you get any coolent in the cyliner.
