1999 GMC Sonoma 2.2L, 5Spd, no reverse lights

Went for inspection sticker to find there where no reverse lights. Checked: blubs, OK....fuse, OK. Took a dump leap of faith and changed out the tranny switch......still no back ups? Next I will jump out the switch currently in the tranny, and test bulb sockets for power. Anything else?

I don't know about you but i would have started with the fuses. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Didn't think they were part of inspection and not the point but they should work. I need them, not OE junk but rear headlights triggered by them for a reason. Find where it/they drop out. IDK, could be common to me in RustoChusetts bad grounds! T

Just spent some time on this with as helper and an elec. meter. Fuses - good, blubs - good, grounds - good. Jumped out tranny switch, reverse lights work. Pulled switch out of tranny & connected it to elec. receptacle, with switch on and truck in reverse, one guy under truck pushed in on switch activator ball....reverse light works!!!! Tested both old & new switch in the same fashion with the same result. Now we tested BOTH new and old switch (out of vehicle) for continuity.....both OK . Double checked travel of switch(s) into tranny making sure both were totally seated and secured. Double checked receptacles connection to switch. BOTH new and old switches are AutoZone / Duralast #DR4029 and are identical. My concerns are: 1. Poor manufacture of switch? Should I track down an AC Delco and compare? Is there something about these two switches we are overlooking? 2. Perhaps something with the shift linkage? 3. What exactly inside the tranny is engaging the ball actuator on the end of the switch? Are such internal issues suspect? 4. Should I look for a switch that might travel into the tranny slightly further? Or grind down one of these? Any help? Thanks in advance. LOU

Sounds like the detent that operates the switch inside the trans has a problem and the trans may have to be opened up.

Yea the problem is that its reach has probably been affected by wear. Plus I just topped off the fluid (Pennsoil Syncromesh). In any event, I went for the old McGuiver fix. Took a drill bit grinding stone, and a sharp little file to the 7/8" hex drive body. Removed aprox. 1/8" just behind the threads (taped the threads first...of course). Reinstalled, and now we have reverse lights. Thank you Hammer.....Car Junkies.... great site the input usually leads to thoughts and solutions.
