1998 passat won't start

I replaced the battery and starter in my 1998 Volkswagen passat. It is manual. I can push-start it and it runs great! As soon as I turn it off it is dead. There is a flickering/ticking of something but no turn over at all when I try to start it. My remote entry does not even work! Help! It has 112000 miles

Was the original intent of the remote entry to also allow starter to crank engine? Have you checked or replaced it's battery?
Check at starter solenoid to see condition of the "trigger" wire for starter. If broken or all corroded that could explain a lot,

Hi Tom, I am not sure about the remote entry, I doubt it though. I did replace the battery and the starter. How do I check the solenoid? I am a girl with Sh!tty home mechanics that are stumped with my car.

Just FYI - the solenoid is really a remote connection to the starter like a an electromagnet to make a larger amp connection for a powerful starter via a smaller wire which I'll call a "trigger" wire. Hard to know if that has adequate current and good connection sometimes.
Typical is that wire enables engine to crank and in turn gives ignition current for spark all at once. If lousy it could/would be erratic.
It's a pill but you can solder in new eyelet end if there's troubles there. Just know "snug" on some wiring doesn't mean a good connection.
Eyesight of the connections is usually enough. It could be a fault with ignition switch but not thinking that right yet.
In my experience - starter solenoids are usually NOT the problem but could be. Check connections and go from there,

For sure! Please refer. Also, how is the solenoid checked? Will I benefit from taking it to an auto electric shop?

ACProf and Cusser both live in Phoenix. Owner, Warren Willingham of the site lives there too but would be less available on the boards for suggestions locally.
Just post what you need and who they like locally and don't worry especially now in Winter that it's a dedicated A/C site. We/They are mechanics also as you have to be for A/C too.
More suggestions may come from right here and so far as said I'd be checking out connection of that "trigger" wire for any current/voltage when starter is requested. If some it may just be too weak. If none there's another fault to find.
Guess but probably a relatively easy fix,
