1998 ford expediton dies while driving Sign In

1998 ford expedition 4.6 engine, 140k miles. Some months back the blower would stay on, I had the blower motor relay replaced. The problem came back a few weeks later, they replaced a switch assy under the seat. Good to go right? Two months later while on vacation the car JUST DIED on the highway:-( Took it to a Ford dealer, they thougth they found a loose wire, but not so. I did it again once I got back on the road. I had another dealer look at it once I drug it home. They connected a computer to it and it died for them, but them the computer would not reconnect. They tried another computer and it connected, but then would not fail for them, even after driving 52 miles. My son drove it, the air bag light came on and it started to die again. He parked it. I went to look at it, the battery was dead, AGAIN:-(. I jumped it and drove it home and there it sits. Any ideas?

I certainly don't know any better than a couple that had their hands on it but finding battery dead a couple times would have me checking everything about the battery, battery connections, condition of the cables - both/all ends as everything electrical starts and ends at the battery so rule out any issue with it and charging system.

Finding no codes, shutting down as it has, and strange issues could all be lousy power or intermittent power (voltage/amps) from alt and battery. Guessing as good as the shops without it in front of me??

The computer depends on voltage, of course, to work. If that voltage drops below the threshold, the computer can't control engine management and the engine will, at best, run terrible. When the voltage drops enough, as in a dead battery, any trouble codes that were stored have been lost. As Tom suggested, have the entire battery/starting/charging system thoroughly tested. Have them test for a parasitic drain on the electrical system. I can't imagine anything 'under the seat' that would have anything to do with the heater blower motor? If the blower motor continues to run after the ignition is turned off, that would definitely drain the battery. I'm more concerned about what is causing the engine to die....lack of voltage, lack of fuel, lack of spark, ect. This needs to be tested at the time of failure. Intermittent failures can drive you nuts. There has to be a reason that the the battery had to be 'jumped'. Good luck.

Look very carefully with a strong light at the back corners of the eng . A wiring harness runs behind the motor very close to the exhaust manifold . Sometmes it will chafe/melt the insulation when hot when eng cools down the short wil go away only to reappear at random .
