i have a 1998 ford escort the other day it was being drove and it died now it wont start and has no electric other than when jumper cables are hooked to it the check engine light comes on and when you turn the key on the light gets brighter

Start off with the battery. Pull it out & get it load tested. If it's bad replace it and clean the battery cables real good with a terminal cleaner....
