1998 escort gti battery and starte Sign In

hi all, i have a 1998 escort gti and having a bit of trouble with it.

when i start the engine it turns over and starts but the motor is still spinning. if i disconnect a blue wire coming from the alternator going to the ignition wires it will work fine but i have no battery light. if this wire is connected and i manage to start the car without the motor staying engaged the battery light comes on. also the battery is not charging.

sounds like a few problems but i dont have a clue anymore lol

anyone help?

Ok, I am kinda understanding what is going on but I am a little confused. As far as I know there is no ignition wires going to the alternator. They are charged and lined to the solenoid. Also when you say your engine keeps spinning, do you mean the starter keeps engaging? And you say the battery is not charging. This could just be end of life for the battery. Get an Alternator test done on your ALT, this service takes about 30 secs and is 95% of the time free. Just check if ALT is charging. Pls get back to me with the answers to my questions so I can help you.

hi there, i have sorted the problems with charging and the starter. the starter motor was staying engaged, this was because of the pin inside being sticky. the battery was not charging as i had the starter motor wired up wrong, the cable from the alt going to the starter i connected to the earth bolt lol, i know, stupid mistake eh.

i have a problem with driving now, when going along the engine seems to lose power and judder or jolt alot, this happens sometimes but is becoming more and more frequent. it is usually when the engine is under load or when you want to go fast ;) but only does it up to around 3 or 4k revs then it is fine. any help would be greatly appreciated as i am going on holiday next week, if the car is ok ;)
