1998 accord suddenly shuts off

1998 Honda Accord EX 4cyl. 2.3 126000 miles ok here is the issue. While driving, engine suddenly dies. This has occured 5 times randomly over the last month. When this happens, everything on the dash goes dark, although the radio stays on as well as the headlights. After coasting to the side of the highway, I switch off the ignition, turn key to run position and eveything lights up again on dash as normal. Then when I turn key to start position, car will fire but immediately shut off. After several attemps, car will start, and end of problem until next occurance. Thanks for taking my question. Oh, the battery terminals are both tight, and I don't have a check engine light.

When the engine doesn't want to start, does the check engine light come on when you turn the ignition on? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

In reply to the check engine light question, yes it comes on along with all the normal start up lights, but goes out when engine starts. I also ran diagnostics and no codes are in the system. Thanks for your reply.

The reason I asked that question is because if the check engine light didn't bulb check when you turned the ignition on that is a sign of a faulty main relay which they were famous for. The trick is to see what is missing at the time of the stall and/or when it doesn't want to start. Sometimes it is difficult to do that with intermittent problems. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You may be on to something. Is this main relay a circuit breaker?

The main relay is what sends power to the engine computer and the fuel pump. It is basically an electromechanical switch. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thank you for your prompt and helpful response. I am hopeful this will solve this problem. Last evening when the car quit as i waited a few minutes i heard something click under the dash like a relay reseting. So i will pop in new relay. I'll be in touch if problem persists.

To add These had Ignition Switch failures causing Stalls as well There was a recall issued for this If all else checks out, check with Honda to see if your vehicle was included in the recall and if so, was it performed.
