1998 Olds Intrigue with repeat starter problem

When turning the key to start there was no starter noise at all. I pulled the starter/ solenoid and tested for continuity as per Chilton's, results showed bad solenoid. Replaced with rebuilt starter/solenoid assembly. Same result when key turned on. I shorted the ignition post to the hot post of solenoid and starter engaged and engine started. For two days and several starts thereafter, the ignition worked. Suddenly there is no action at all with key on. I tried shorting the solenoid again, there is juice but no starter engagement. What to do next? Thank you in advance.
