1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue
3.8 Liter V6

I recently replaced the starter and it worked fine for about a week until it started to not fire up right away. I thought that this could be a problem with the battery so I took it to my local parts dealer and had them check it and it was a little weak so I replaced the battery. Now what happens when I try to start it is that all of the lights come on and all of the electrical systems work fine except it will not turn over, but if I leave the key in the ON position for 15-20 minutes the car will eventually start without a problem. I checked all of the connections on the starter and they seemed fine, I really don't know what else to do, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We need to establish what happens when you turn the key to start:

1. Tries to turn over but can't
2. Click
3. Nothing

It does sound to me like it could be your pump. The reasoning behind this is you say that you can leave your car in the "on" position and 20 mins later it will start. When you go from Off to Acc, yoru car's electrics kick in, which activates the fuel pump, then on the car primes everything ready to start, thats why all your warning lights coming on then disappear, fuel pump is still working at this time, then start is obviously go time.

If your fuel pump or fuel filter is blocked or faulty it may take longer to the fuel into your engine to start.

It does click when I try to start it. But before I replaced the starter the car would make that signature high-pitched squeal that told me it was time to replace the starter but it would start up just fine otherwise. Would changing the starter have an effect on the fuel pump?
