1997 Subaru Imprez Outback 2.2 lit,122.000 mil. Blew 45 amp fuse Sign In

Hello,So going the road, heard a pop noise , car died, found a 45 amp fuse blown (sbf #4), switched with # 5, worked fine, made it home, haven't driven it since, since I live way out in the country, and this would not bode well for me.Seeing how it's a 45 amp,is this a strong indicator of "sumptin ain't right".Please advise and I thank you for your time and knowledge.

sbf#4 is for the ignition switch so that means the overload could be the switch itself or anything else the switch feeds or any of the related wiring.

yes,I just read that.Should I plan on buying a switch, while having a ride to town or check it with a ohm reader. It seems that once the sbf#4's blow, it continuously does so, since I drove 10 miles after the initial switch, might indicate it was a fluke or do I have a weekend project ahead of me? I appreciate your reply.

start with a thorough inspection of your wiring with a good light. Look for anywhere it can rub against something, missing split loom, broken zip ties, something a bit too close to the exhaust. You may need to move the wiring bit to try to see it since it isn't a dead short. I wouldn't randomly throw a switch at it if you don't know for sure that its the issue.

Thanks for that,I'm a real girl when it comes to anything electrical,so excuse my idiotic questions. So do I start with the wires at the switch, main fuse box or....
I have 3 spare fuses, and plan to go for a ride ( still have to feed the pigs) and see if it blows again.I'm off work today, so after the fog clears,I can start with your advice.

You've at least got the good sense to realize that a blown 45 amp fuse means something needs to be looked into and you also carry spares. Thats a lot more than a lot of people out there. I would start looking under the hood and then progress to looking under the dash. You will probably need to pull off a few lower trim panels under the dash to get a good look around the switch. If you aren't seeing anything obvious, unhook the battery and then unplug the ignition switch. Probably have to pop off a few nuts or bolts to allow the column to lower down a bit so you can get at it and see things clearly. Look for burn damage in the plug or carbon tracks in the ignition switch. It will point you in the right direction.

When the pigs get a little bigger save me a sausage or two.

It takes a real severe overload to blow a 45 amp fuse so look for a heavy wire that may be contacting the car frame/body somewhere.
