I have a borrowed truck matching the description given in subject that has developed a major problem. Everything was working fine when I shut it off but 30 minutes later I started it up and discovered that I no longer had power steering or power assist on the brakes. I have checked the in vehicle manual for fuses and relays that may be related and have found nothing named that I can see. there was one fuse blown but it was only relating to the horn. What am I missing? Are both of these systems assisted by a common component and if so where do I find it?

pastorj; Check the belts. Some diesels use the power steering pump belt for hydro-boost for the brake power assist. Loren SW Washington

Those pump have also been know to break the shaft. Loosen the belt & tug on the pulley, if the shaft slips out, it's broken.....

It looks like the advice was right on. I released tension on the belt and tried to move the pulley in and out. There is about 1 inch play in the shaft so I am concluding that the power steering pump is broken. There are high pressure lines connected to the master cylinder from the pump so I guess that is the power assist for the brakes. I guess this wasn't an electrical problem at all, thanks for the help.

I'm sure ya got plenty stashed way Loren... Looks like you found the problem Pastor..... You are correct about the brk power assist. Thats a hydraboost system that uses the p/s pump. That tough luck just borrowing the truck & that happening. Do realize tho that this had nothing to do with what you did & would have happened to the owner anyway, you just had bad timing.....
