I bought a 1996 dodge Dakota ext. cab v6 manual. The fuel gauge doesn't work. Sometimes it twitches but it usually doesn't move off of the empty. What could cause this?

a bad electrical connection, bad cluster or bad sending unit. Plenty of things so need to diagnose it. You can pull the sending unit out of the tank and look at it first. The float could have a leak which keeps it full of fuel instead of floating as it should. If this isn't the case put a multimeter on the connectors and read ohms as you slowly sweep from empty to full. Does the reading change corresponding to the position of the float? I'm going to guess you don't have access to a scan tool that can read body data. That would really help save time if you could see if the computer is getting a reading for the fuel level.
