1996 Jeep Cherokee Instrument Panel Lights Blow Fuse Sign In

The entire instrument panel is dark on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport (4.0). I don't remember if any of the idiot lights go off or not or if the turn signal/hazard indicators work. (I primarily drive it only during the day for obvious reasons.) I finally checked the fuse and sure enough, it was burned. I got a replacement fuse and the lights worked only for a second or two before it went out again. The only thing I did was attempt to adjust the brightness by turning the light switch.

Is it possible there's a short in the light switch? What else is in that line that could be doing it? How can I tell for sure? More importantly, how can I fix it?

Hopefully someone here has encountered and fixed this problem. If so, please let me know! Thanks!

Ian

It sounds like one of your headlight wires has a bad earth. This could be quite a pain in the butt, as there are SO MANY wires under the dash. Have a look at all your harnesses and see if you can see and GREEN wires that are loose. Whatever you do, don not put a larger fuse size in to try and correct the problem. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks. It's raining cats & dogs right now, so it might be a few days until I can take a look. But thanks for the heads up. I'll start by following from the headlight switch to as far as I can, then look at all the green wires. I'll let you know how it goes. Is there anything I can use to help out? Like a multi-tester?

With wiring it is always a "sounds like" issue. Especially when trying to diagnose problems from the other side of the world. This one should be a cut and dry short. SO start looking for earth wires that are visibly loose, then other wires that look loose, or are contacting with stuff they shouldn't. You could use a circuit tester on and loose wires you see to see if you are getting power to them.

odds are its your headlight switch the dimmer can short out and cause this problem, mine is doing the same thing and have traced this out before on others
