1995
GMC
Sonoma
2.2 L
175,000 miles

My truck is intermittently not starting. The beginning of the problem was a fusible link that burned up on a power distribution block on the drivers side in the engine compartment. Turned out that someone had doubled up two lines that were pushing volts causing the link to burn up. I moved one line off to an open bolt on that block and secured it and vehicle started fine. A while later it would not start again I determined it was the starter and replaced it. The truck ran fine for two weeks or so and now it is not starting every time. I took a 10 gauge ground wire that I have and hooked it up to known good ground one time when it was starting and touched it to starter ground and had my friend turn the key and it started right up. So i ran my own ground directly from the bolt attaching the starter to transmission to the negative terminal of the battery. This did not work. Basically, when the vehicle is starting I can drive it for a little while but when the vehicle gets shut off it will not start again. A few ways i have gotten it to start again is if i lightly tap on it with a hammer while someone turns the key it will start, If i arc the two power cables with a screwdriver it will start, if i hold a ground on it, it will start. I can hear the relay click if i turn the key, it does not start, and release key it will click a few seconds after. I think it might be the ignition switch but i do not have the tools to take it out so if someone can tell me a way to test it and maybe test the relay that would be great. Someone please help me with this I need this truck to run.

If you have gotten it to start by tapping on the starter, then you have a bad starter.
