I have a wrangler jeep 1995 2.5 petrol and recently started squealing like the fan belt was slipping. Went for a drive when I stopped and came to re-start the engine it just "clicked" & nothing happened. I replaced the alternator with a new one but now after running the engine for only 30 seconds, the alternator becomes mega hot! and only showing 9 volts on dashboard. Two 40amp fuses had burnt out in the fuse box which I have replaced.I have cleaned all connections both to battery & alternator, tested the alternator (which appears fine). What could be the cause of this? Don't want to run the vehicle and risk knackering the new alternator as it cost me quite a bit (the alternator that is)!Mad

beechnuts; Alternators are not battery chargers. They will get hot. And, you can destroy one by trying to charge a low battery. Charge the battery and have it tested. A fully charged battery will have 13.2V. Also, make sure the belt is tight enough. A slipping belt can cause heat, as well. The blown fuses are a concern. What systems do they protect? If you don't have a legend, let us know what number it lists them as.

Has, by any chance, the battery has been hooked up backwards, or someone tried jumping it with the cables reversed? Get the battery fully charged, recheck all of your connections. Then, give it a go.
