1995 GMC Jimmy license plate light

Last night a cop complained that my license plate light was out. Frankly, in the 14 years I've had this Jimmy I never gave a moment's thought to a license plate light & I have no idea whether it ever had one. Today I took a look and yes, there is a small clear plastic piece mounted with 2 screws on the rear bumper over the license plate area, but when I removed it I found just an empty hole -- no bulb, no socket, and it doesn't look like a socket was ever there. I looked in the owner's manual & there is no mention of a license plate light. I seems as if a maybe place was provided for an optional light that was never installed?
Am I supposed to have one? I don't feel like bothering to install a custom accessory light that's not required.

No, that light is original equipment. The socket is attached to the end of the wire and that is either tucked away somewhere or somebody cut the wire.

OK, you sound pretty sure about that. I guess the next step is to go fishing inside the bumper. What a pain ...

OH yes, I'm sure it came with a tag light. It's the law.

Thanks, pal, I found it. Can't imagine that it could've worked itself loose though -- one of the guys at the dealer's shop (who knows how many years ago) must have pulled it out to replace the bulb & didn't reinstall it correctly.
Love your penguin. The 'Vette's pretty sweet too, but not in my budget.
