1995 - Cadillac Intermittent Dash Light Failure

I have a 1995 - Cadillac - STS - 4.6L Northstar - 49,650 miles (Really)...
Problem is that the dashboard will periodically dim & eventually go entirely black (information display remains lit)... a few seconds to minute(s) later the dashboard comes back on.
Thinking that it might be a problem related to the light switch (auto light control) I turned the lights on manually without any change in the dash light blackout problem. No failure message is displayed when this happens!
Anyone experienced this problem - if so - what was the fix?
