1994 Cavalier Low Amp & Voltage Sign In

Hello, I have a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier (automatic, 2.2 L, 151000 km) that's been having some electrical problems and I would appreciate any help I can get in solving them.

It started with the check engine light coming on about five minutes after starting the car, everytime we drove it. The air conditioning and heating would only really start working after the check engine light came on too. I tried to pull the fault codes manually, but it wouldn't give any. It didn't seem too major, so we kept driving it until it had quite a fit: the ABS, check engine and battery lights were flashing, the brakes were seizing up, it was over-revving and making a screeching kind of noise. After I got it home, it wouldn't start (wouldn't even try to turn over or click).

After having it parked for a month or so, I got a new battery for it (we had switched the previous one into a different vehicle) and it started up. So we brought it to the shop to get them to scan the fault codes and check it over. Their remarks were:

LOW AMP OUTPUT
CODE-23 INTAKE AIR AMP LOW
CODE-36 SYSTEM VOLTAGE LOW

They checked the battery and charging system, found that the battery was low, charged the battery, drove the car and determined that the car is giving a false code.

But something definitely seems wrong. Now the battery light comes on immediately after starting the car and it stays on unless I'm pushing on the gas. The check engine & ABS lights come on about five minutes after starting, and the AC and heat still only really work after that.

If anyone has any suggestions of what might be causing the problem or how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated.

That barely deserves a reply. Low output from an alternator in this POS is not rocket science. Learn the word "concise" or get ignored here,

Obviously it's not rocket science, but I still don't know how to resolve it.

Maybe you could try a concise response instead of one that doesn't help? It honestly would be appreciated.

And exactly how did you come to that conclusion?

That was the conclusion of the mechanics where we brought it in. But based on the symptoms I'd say they're mistaken.

How about some actual test results?

Yeah I'm sure that would be useful. Unfortunately though all I have is those fault codes and what the mechanics told me.

I doubt they keep the test results on file for customers to access later.

Anything you can think of without seeing those?

The first thing you have to do is positively determine if the alternator output is sufficient before you consider anything else.

Isn't that CAVEMAN technology and don't insult me or the whole thread is gone!

Okay, I'll borrow a multimeter as soon as I can and post again once I have some results.

Thanks.
