Purple wire TMK is just supposed to get power to trigger the solenoid when starter requested. If 12v or close power all the time the starter is asked to run. No surprise now starter runs when you hook up battery. Was on watch for this. Did you really toast the starter with a bad battery as you said you disconnected it sounds like you limped along with a lousy one for some time maybe? Oddly low power/amps+volt can melt up wiring as it isn't going to turn starter but before you get the machine gun flutter to prevent this problem it might not have and a reason for messing with the wires now wrong.
