1993 Corolla Brake lights don't work properly when headlights are on.
|

I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla that was working fine with no electrical issues. Out of the blue the brake lights stay on when headlights are on. When headlights are off the brake lights work properly. All other lights seem to be working properly. HELP!

Sedan or Wagon? Does this have any wiring modification such as a trailer lighting?
You sure you are not getting confused with the parking lamps? Is the third brake lamp on without your foot on the brake with the headlamps on?

It's the Sedan. No modification at all. The center brake light is lit the entire time the headlights are on.

Probably a good place to start is by inspecting the brake lamp bulbs. I think they are double filament (not sure), so one bulb does both brake and parking lamps. Maybe a filament for the parking lamps has laid over the brake filament. Inspect the socket and the contacts on the bottom of the lamps. Seen the solder melt and make contact with another circuit. Also inspect the wiring harness for the lamps.

Checked all connections on the bulbs themselves. No issues with connection or wires. No change. Still have the brake lights on when headlights are on. Checked all the fuses and they are good.
One thing I had forgotten to mention was that the interior lights brighten when the brake is depressed no matter whether the headlights are on or not.
Any Ideas?

I believe what he meant was to see if you have the correct bulbs and they are in correctly.

Your probably going to have to get hold of a 12 V test light or a digital volt meter and make some checks. Your also going to need a wiring schematic of the lighting system. Using the schematic and test equipment you should be able to locate the source of the short between the brake and parking lamp circuits.

Thank you for all the help. It had multiple shorts in the rear wiring harness and it needed to be completely replaced. Thank you again for the help.
