1992 toyata corrolla battery is being drained while car is off Sign In

1992 Toyota corolla 1.6L 4 cylinder with 75000 miles battery is being drained while car and ignition is off. I think it is related to the fact the fuse to the back running lights blew. I had this problem before and the wires to the tag light were loose and after repair problem was solved, but without the battery drain. I searched for another loose connection, but I couldn't find one. I took the car to AutoZone to verify the battery and alternator was in good condition and according to their equipment it they were. due to the back lights only burning while head lights are turned on, I thought there might be some other reason for this problem. Do ya'll have any other suggestions?

To find a draw on a vehicle you really need a way to measure amps with......You hook on to one of the battery cables and any thing over 50ma is too high and can drain a battery......

A DIYer way would be to remove one of the battery cables and hook a test light to the battery post and then touch the cable end with the other end of the test light....If it lights up this would indicate a draw on the battery.......Then just start pulling fuses one at a time until the light goes out...That fuse is to the circuit causing the draw....

The only footnote would be on some of the new cars, checking the system this way would keep some of the modules "awake" and give you a false reading. If any of the fuses you pulled were connected to any modules then you would have to go to an amp probe to be sure it was a real draw and not one you were causing with a test light....

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 10 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.

When you say you would have to go to an amp probe, are you intending to direct him to use a clamp on amp meter as opposed to wiring an ammeter in series?

Amp probes will not work well for this as they are not sensitive enough in most cases. you could show no flow or even have a small fluctuating value with no actual current present.

ussessex, you need to stop giving electrical advice here. You came here because you couldn't figure out your own turn signal problem and now you want to dispute advice given by people that perform electrical diagnostics for a living.

Really........10mA isn't sensitive enough???? Guess I'll have to throw my low amp probe away tomorrow.....

You should take Desi's advise and focus on your own problem........Most DIYer don't have amp probes or ammeters..... I simply offered an old school way to find a simple draw with enough caution that if the draw was related to a module in any way, to think about it before throwing money at it....
