1992 Subaru SVX. 3.3 Was driving at night. Lights got brighter then dimmed and finally I heard a zipping sound and all went dark and engine quit. I smelled something burning inside the vehicle. I discovered a burned main fused wire in the fuse box under the hood. Replaced that and the alternator. Found some burned fuses inside fuse box. I can start the car and drive on battery power. The battery will not charge, lights do not come on, and no radio, power windows, dash lights. It seems to blow out ten amp fuses as quick as I put them in but others seem to be ok. I tested relays for continuity and all main fuses seem Ok. Wondering if it is a direct short or one of the three computer control units burned out. Also when I put the key in I get a beeping sound.
Not a mechanic here... Any ideas?

Well if you burnt a main fuse you definitly have a direct short to ground. I'll need to pull a schemo for this car and take a look, but I would check at places like the starter [main +12v wire] or any main large wire that runs most stuff in the car. if got a burning smell, well there will be melted wires [or very brittle at least] and they will probably still stink. 1st thing is to find them and fix them. then you can unplug what they go to and start tracing and finding if a component cause the short OR it was just a wire. You should record all the fuses that blew, and start by pulling them out. once the melted wires are fixed you can plug each fuse in 1 by one and see what one blows, that will be a problem circuit. and you can follow the wiring diagram from there as to what components are zorched. any questions just ask!
Remember, don't let the smoke out of your electronics!
