I was driving down the road and the truck was running great. I suddenly smelled raw fuel for just a second and the truck died. No noises, no engine lights, nothing. I tried to start it but it just cranks over. The timing belt is fine, fuel pump and filter are both good (checked them all). What I did narrow it down to is this......This truck has two distributors. They both have power going into them but the front one has no spark coming out of it. So, I switched them around thinking I had a bad one and still the same problem....the front distributor is not putting out a spark. Someone told me it could be the crank sensor valve but I was told if that was bad, you wouldn't have spark out of the rear distributor, which I do. I am stumped. Any suggestions? It's a great running truck but it's not really worth taking to the dealer to try to diagnose it. This is a 1992 Ford Ranger with a 4 cylinder, 5 speed transmission with only 52,000 miles but it has been sitting for quite some time. I have changed fuel filter, plug wires, oil, etc. I have diagnosed that it is NOT a fuel problem. It is definetely a problem with that front distributor. Thanks for your help.
