1992 Chrysler Lebaron 3.0 Alternator?

1992 Chrysler Lebaron 3.0 Alternator? Sign In

I have a '92 Lebaron with the 3.0 V6 and only 65k on the clock. When I first picked up the car, it would seem like while driving it if i gave it gas then quickly let off the gas everything would dim and the rpms would drop almost to the point of stalling. Now, since the car sees almost no use it seems as if the battery is always dead and requires a jump just to start. The previous owner replaced the battery, so is it safe to assume the alternator is the problem? (the belt seems fine). Is there a voltage regulator on this car? Also the check engine light is now on when the car is running.

Sense the engine light is on that would be the way to finding the problem, you have to have the codes read, at autozone or somewhere they do OBDI testing or you can try yourself using the info from this link

To add: Even the new battery could be junk from going dead too much and especially if below freezing. Try charging that and then test it and bet you do find the alt (regulator inside it) is bad. Some of the Crystler cars are finicky about a good battery or they don't run well just because of that??

Do get the codes as Dave suggests and figure the rest out after the battery and alternator are known ok,

Actually the voltage regulator is built into the computer and is non serviceable, other then replacing the computer.
If by chance the regulator is at fault, there is a way of wiring in and older style of external regulator But you had be pretty familiar with the system or you could get yourself into a lot of trouble. As in letting the smoke out of some of the electronic boxes; not a good thing. LOL

I think as soon as Chrysler went electronic fuel injection; they went with computer controlled charging system or at least when they went with the high output alternators. The next time you start up an older Chrysler have a listen and you’ll hear the alternator kick in after about 5 or 10 seconds; after the engine has stabilized.
I believed their thinking was to have the engine stable and then throw the load of the alternator at those poor old 2.2 Lt. K-cars; in the hope it didn’t stall out. LOL
