1991 calais radiator fan always running Sign In

1991 oldsmobile cutlass calais 2.3 quad 4 ..... radiator fan is running as soon as engine starts hot or cold. replaced coolant temp. sensor and relay on firewall. when I checked codes originally had code 13 temp sensor 14 0xygen sensor and code 41 mem-cal or ecm error. replaced coolant sensor and code 13 is gone but fan is still running....funny thing happens when I connect jumper to A-B leads for diagnostic codes and turn key on the fan starts running????. looking at haynes wiring diagram it shows coolant sensor and coolant temp switch, coolant sensor has black and yellow wires which is the sensor I replaced coolant temp switch is dark green/wht single wire and I located that wire out of harness laying next to coolant sensor not attached to anything!! no switch or sensor around to plug into, is this right ? also this car does not have a temp gauge on dash just a dummy light for temp. very confused ... ecm problem or ? thanx also a/c is not on causing fan operation

The actual CTS has yellow and black wires. You're going to need a professional scan tool to determine what's going on that is causing the fan to run. Someone could have modified the wiring previously too. Make sure the A/C isn't running because that would cause it to run also.

thanks hammer time for your response, yes I did forget to mention a/c is not on because that will engage coolant fan to run so I'm guessing that the trouble code diagnostic feature is just a starting point... thanx again

Yes, it is. Now you have to use a scan tool to access the data and find out if the computer is commanding it on or not and maybe you can see why.

Re: radiator fan always running Sign In

If you have a volt meter, you can check the CTS voltage while the coolant is warming up at the sensor itself. The sensor's resistance goes down as the coolant temperature increases. If the circuit is open or has a fault, the ECM will turn the fan on by default. Inspect the coolant fan wiring and relay as HT stated. A lot of times people bypass the control side or wire the fan directly to ignition power when the fan relay driver burns out in the ECM.

Before you start testing sensors, I thin k you need to narrow things down a little first by finding out what temp the computer sees and whether it is the one putting the fan on or not. Then you will have an idea where you should be looking.
