1990 toyota corolla battery not charging Sign In

Ok to start with this is a 1990 Toyota Corolla 2.0L FI 4cyl with 200,000 miles. What happen was, we were driving down the road and the car just dies(Battery was dead). So i got the nice local police to carge the battery some with jumper cables so i could make it home, but it died right when i pulled in the drive way.So the next day i pulled the alternator and had it tested at auto-zone, they said it was good (i put another one on it from the same model car that i knew worked just in case) and yet it still died.So i took it to a shop and they tested the voltage from the alternator (it was 13.5) and at the battery (was the same there also 13.5). You can pull the cable off the battery while the car is sitting still and it will run just fine, but yet while driving it will just die (whenever it wants). The car will run fine for 2-3 days with a new battery in it (about 20-25 miles a day). I just have no clue what to check to even find this problem, or even a clue to what could cause it. The battery on it now has 450 cold cranking amps (i think) and 550ish normal i think. Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Dustin

Oh i also forgot to add, that if you let the car sit still for awhile while running, kill it and try to start it, the battery stays dead.

we have been putting a new battery every 3 days (useing the warrenty to replace) just to use the car. Autozone told us to just keep bringin them back till we can fix the problem. Every battery we bring back, they test it. It will always have 1+ dead cells in it, when the car is done with it.

Can appreciate AZ working with you but ONE dead cell if any one there could possibly know that is questionable!

Get your own voltmeters and read outputs of the alternator. A truly bad battery will near instantly kill a new alternator as they work like a marriage!

PS: Not to bash auto parts outlets but they are not necessarily mechanics or close to it!

Already had a shop test it for me, said the alternator was fine, they tested it at the alternator, middle of the wireing harness, and at the battery. Was the same all the way across.

Ok i just went out and hooked up a meter. With the car off and key out, i hooked one end onto the neg. side of the battery. Then pulled the positive cable off the battery and hooked the other end of the meter to it. Set the meter to ohm and got a reading of 28.1 (went up and down alot befor staying at that). Dunno if i did that right or not so.. yeah tell me if i did it wrong lol. If not what does it mean?

dustin; A properly operating alternator will charge at 13.6 to 14.6 volts at or about 800 rpm. If battery voltage is the same as max. charging voltage, all you are reading is battery voltage. I'd have the system retested somewhere else.
Make sure that the battery is fully charged before they run the test. You cannot accurately test a charging system with a low battery. As Tom said, a bad battery can kill an alternator. A bad alternator can kill a battery. A low battery can kill a starter as well. A bad starter can drain/kill a battery. All, including connections, need to be retested.
One more thing; Don't take the battery cable off when the engine is running. You can damage diodes in the alternator by doing so.
Good luck.

THanks for the reply, I just put a new alternator and a new battery on it today, the battery that is recommmended for the car, its a little bigger than the other one i had. I'll go have it retested today and see what they say. Thanks for the help everyone.
