1990 Ford F-250 Ignition problems

Have just purchased a '90 F-250 5.8L that I knew had ignition problems. Problem is, I did not know how bad it was. The truck fires up fine, but will not turn off! I have just replaced the ignition switch, but no improvement. Obviously the previous owner had messed things up. If someone can at least point me in the right direction to start, it would really be appreciated. PS, I'm trying to get hold of manual, but no luck yet. Forgot to add that the battery is new, and also the starter relay is new. I suspect this may be where the problem lies, but with no wiring diags, I do not know.

Guess: There may be a relay that is stuck making the ignition connection without the prompt. Surprised battery doesn't do dead though after whatever method you are shutting this down??

This is where it gets tricky. Even with the ignition in the 'OFF' position I still have dash lights (ck engine, and the battery symbol). I disconnect the battery after doing what little trouble-shooting I have done, otherwise I'm sure it would go south. Also, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but it is possible to go through the gears irregardless of the position of the key in the ignition. Sid

If it can go thru the gears with key in any position that a great clue! What must be happening is the lock cylinder itself - not the ignition switch itself is allowing it to hold this in a wrong position.
Some how the rod that goes down to the electrical ignition switch is probably screwed up - why - who knows?
Ford had some issues with some cars - Taurus to be specific where key would remove from ignition and leave power on to some assories and kill a battery but those didn't stay running.
With this new info - it's about certain all the troubles are in the column and you probably have to get in there first just with the covering you can remove and see then no doubt remove the steering wheel - takes some tools.
If this is messed up enough you might be able to just get a whole column - key and all used and be easier than fixing possible broken parts in this one - can't know that from here of course.
Surprised the starter motor part works and doesn't stay on or something. Good luck with it,

Tom-Thank you very much. As I had said, goodness only knows what the previous owner(s) had gotten up to. A project for next weekend.
