1988 Corvette brake lights Sign In

My brake lights quit working. Everything else is working, including the third brake light. I assumed the wires broke on the turn signal switch due to the tilt column. I replaced the switch and the lights work now, but if you tilt the wheel down they go out. If I move the wheel down slow they work, but faster, they go out. Also, when they are on, with the car off, no keys, if I turn on the turn signal, that side goes out, flip to the other side it goes out, for example, right signal, right light out, but left brake on. What am I missing?

Could be a few things. maybe the your brake light switch it shorting on something when you move the column, the other thing I am thinking is when you move the column, the brake light wires are either being pinched, or they may have a bare spot that is shorting out somewhere. I would check those 2 things and let me know.

I had a buddy watch the lights while I went under the dash. As I pulled/pushed on the white wire in the new turn switch plug, the lights went off/on! I looked at the old plug and the same connector was black. It must have been sparking too. Is there a good way to make this connection better?

If you have already replaced the signal switch, I would have a look at the wiring harness that plugs into the switch at the base of the column. I have seen the white wire that comes from the brake light switch become cut from the factory crimping. The wire is still held into position but electrically it is not connected any more; the insulation of the wire is holding it there.
As for the brake light going out when you click right or left turn (ignition off) that is normal.

Just cut the wire on either side of the plug & connect the wires with a small jumper.
