OK I recently got a 87 f250 7.3 diesel and it wont turnover it just clicks when I turn the key I don't know anything about diesel engines but I jumped it at the starter solenoid ant it turned over but its like it isn't registering that the key is in the on position so I thought it was the solinoid so I tried to jump it across there but it just sparked there are about 7 wires on one post and one on the other is that right or is it just my solenoid

With the info given and your troubleshooting level taken into account , no insult intended , I would recommmend a replacement starter. New or reman not rebuilt. Yes the wiring you descibed on the starter is normal

You didn't mention if you had the battery(s) tested or not, so before going through all the trouble of replacing things you should have battery(s) load tested to be sure they are good first.

Thank you sir I trust your judgment but I was always under the impression that if the starter could make the engine turn over it was in good shape is that a wrong assumption

OK, which is it? It cranks or it doesn't crank?

Good point about testing batt DS. I re-read the post and realized poster is saying two different things. Is the starter just clicking or is it turning over the eng and eng is a no start. That truck should have two high cranking amp batteries , 1000 ca prefered, in order to turn ing over at proper rpm.

It is turning over when I bridge the starter solenoid but not when I turn the key when I turn the key it clicks

If this can turn over engine at a respectable RPM by "bridging solenoid" (solenoid is sprung switch really to 'flutter' if amps are too low' to save starter from burning out as low amps or too high a draw from starter can/will kill it) then I'd replace the solenoid.

Looks by just a parts look up much larger + stronger for the diesel as by nature they require a LOT of power to crank.

Should look like this........

Yikes! Over $50 bucks but it has to be good. Trigger wire on typical Fords just pushes on but might be screwed down and also must get the lower gauge of volts but still enough to pull plunger to connect.

If it doesn't crank to decent RPM then starter or lower amps than needed OR engine too tight for some reason?
