1986 chevy pickup, intermittently does not start Sign In

1986 chevy 1/2 ton with a 305 and about 130,000 km will start one day but perhaps not the next. An intermittent problem . No spark when it does not start. So we replaced the ignition module, pickup coil, and coil. There does not seem to be anything else to replace. There is power getting to the distributor but nothing comes out. Currently it is in a no start situation. Any ideas. I have looked on the net and found many other people with almost an identical problem but I have not found any solutions yet. Thank you.

Double check the wiring for the dist/ign module and those connections. They can be the trouble especially if this uses a vacuum advance which I doubt but still an issue,

Those wires are good. I have also read that the vacuum advance (which this truck has) can physically wear those wires you mentioned. There are a cluster of 4 wires that go from the distributor through the firewall at the passenger side. I am wondering where they go and if perhaps they are grounding out and causing the distributor not to distribute. Thank you for your reply

You'll have to refresh my memory; Is this the HEI distributor (coil inside the cap?) And, has it started since you replaced the module, coil, and pick-up coil? Did you replace the cap and rotor at the same time?
HEI: Take the cap back off and make sure the carbon piece is protruding into the cap so it can contact the rotor.
These also used a ground strap that attached to one of the four screws that hold the coil in place.
Standard: Closely examine the distributor cap (internally) looking for a carbon track from the center carbon piece.
If you have power going to the distributor and none coming out, you are looking in the right place. Since it starts intermittently, I'm assuming that the distributor is turningSmile. It is very rare, but the roll pin that holds the gear onto the distributor can break, allowing the gear to slip a bit on the shaft, but this would not affect spark.

Hi, this distributor has the coil in the cap. It has not been started since it had the new parts added to the distributor. I did not add new rotor and cap but exchanged them for others just to make sure it was not a cap or rotor problem. The carbon button is protruding. There is a grounding strap present and screwed down. Not sure what else to check.

Ok: This should be HEI with coil in cap and the things Loren suggested are worth checking. It's intermittent so it's going to be tricky by nature.

The wire INSIDE cap to module are what I was thinking of or any that don't look good. Those wires that plug onto the module with vac advance MOVE and were a trouble spot. The plastic insulation may look intact but the wire could be broken inside - that goes with wires all over older vehicles - door jams etc.

Ok: Guess if those are still a possibility then feel along wire might show a weak area or wiggle them while ohm testing. Been a while of course but I do recall seeing the wires actually touch the side and wear thru insulation but they can fail without that also.

Keep at it. I'm pretty sure you are in the right area for the trouble,

There are 4 wires that go from the distributor to the firewall, we followed them and they go to and ic board. We have been told this is an electronic spark control module. Apparently they have caused grief and can be found behind the glove compartment or under the seat. We were told you can bypass it but unplugging it and connecting the green to the black wire. We are now getting spark. It still will not start though. It is timed properly but not a sputter.

Ok: If you are getting spark and ON TIME without so much as a sputter than perhaps by now plugs are seriously flooded which complicates the progress with this. Some plugs won't just "air" dry worth a crap and need to be removed and heated or replaced to make the spark jump across electrodes again - if multiple tries has in fact caused flooding,
