1986 cadillac

I have a 1986 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 5.0 the no charges light came on so I took the alternator off an had it checked its good so I put in a new battery an the light came back on can some one help me

Test for power at the main terminal of the alternator with the key off.

That means the fusible link is good. I would test the rest of the fuses in the car with a test light and the key on as there is one more power feed to the alternator but if all that is good, it comes back to a bad alternator.

?? Wild maybe. Might and say MIGHT be that a battery (red usually) warning light bulb is blown! Caddy does some things differently but I think this if the late RWD Caddy was using a lot of old Oldsmobile ways and that dang bulb somehow supplied power or continuity to the two prong plug if this uses that.


Sorry as it's just wild guessing as GM wanted to dump this model and did TMK for a couple model years around then and brought it back - RWD one not the FWD one.


It's only a wild guess from GMs that worked on bench, had power like you said but didn't charge and NO plain light for battery itself would show. Should light with key in run position but not running then might be worth checking out??

I should have asked this first, but have you tested the charging system voltage with the car running?

Yes - definitely check operating voltage and again with lights on, RWD on how much it drops if any.


Is this your alternator?

Those two spades towards rear are fine if it tested off car but plug may not be and those don't charge properly or well if a problem with the plug end right there.


TMK this is totally an OLDs engine (fine) but if somehow this has "V" belt still by 1986 I'm surprised but some one belt tension left another loose and it could also be slipping? Check if you can turn fins by hand, engine off of course,

You said you had the voltage at the red larger wire connector at the alternator as Hammer Time asked so that is fine.


1. Now what's the real voltage when running?


2. Multiple "V" belts or one serpentine self tensioned belt?


2a. Can it slip?


3. With voltmeter on battery reading too low if it does wiggle that two wire connector and tap on alternator to see if it changes or suddenly shows proper charging


I don't think there's another fusible link for the alternator. Check all fuses if you don't have a location marked clearly it should show in an OE owner's manual. I've looked for parts, pig-tails and this year and 1985 were a bit confused with TWO Cadillac Fleetwoods the only 5.0 was brought back after being discontinued as said for a short time. I simply can't find consistent info and limited anyway on specifics which may be different by month of manufacture??

 Guess what I checked the alternator again check good I sad no way so I bought one put it on no more light runs good so what the hell

No telling now and we/I don't know how it was tested off car if that's what you meant. If working properly now you'll never know for sure but don't argue with it. Connection now better or plug in better perhaps intermittent brush contact - it's done and works.

The light is triggered by the alternator itself. It is possible for an alternator to still charge but have a fault in the light circuit.

Unlocked for now by me. What's the operating voltage now with this alternator on the car? As HT said this would only tell dash warnings from the alternator. That type was used in non automotive engine quite a bit too it was fairly basic but used the two prongs to send out info and needed to be able to for charging.


Again - check the voltage now and whatever the off car results showed don't seem to be accurate? Any requires voltage for an alternator to work properly as in good battery or what a testing machine does,

The car is fine. The thread can remain closed. I was just explaining how the alternator could fail in the light circuit and still charge normally.
