1986 Ford Crown Victoria tail light problem. Please help. Sign In

My tail lights and dashboard lights have gone out. Twice, they have worked for an entire ride to a destination, but not back. I checked the fusebox and nothing was burnt out, and I changed the taillamp fuse just to be safe. My dad and his friend suggest that I take out the headlight switch and buy a new one. Any advice I should know about before I go buy a new headlight switch?

Not sure but if all running lights are out check that the fuse has voltage at all and on both sides of the fuse.

Another goofy problem is the brakes light switch. Wires to it (it's on the swing arm of the brake pedal) are a bit short and get pulled out. That can make the fuse blow for brake lights and I think that is involved with power for running lights. If that brake switch is a problem -- brake lights won't work, car won't like to shift out of park, cruise won't work. If so the wires are the problem and less likely the switch itself. You need a new plug and the two wires (junk yard easiest) and splice in a new plug and wires connected by color a little longer than orig but keep them away from moving parts. That was so common that I still keep tht stuff around and is quick to fix.

Check in trunk also for wires and sockets to taillights especially if they have been bumped around with items in trunk,

Are the front running lights working when the taillights are out? If yes, look for a wiring problem. If the front lights are out also(running/parking)replace switch. Your dash lights are on a 5 amp fuse. The fuse is either good or bad. If problem comes and goes, fuse should not be the problem. We have seen a lot of light switches go on your body style car.
