My short bed 1978 F100 Custom Ford pick-up has the straight 6 cylinder with a four speed. I use it as a farm truck but would like get it inspected and tagged for road use. The signal lights are not working properly so it will not pass inspection. The right signal works sometimes but the left does not. Each dash arrow light glows as designed but does not blink. I would rather not pull the steering wheel if there is a simple check list of things I can do to diagnose the problem. I have already replaced the bulbs and cleaned the connections.

Also, if pulling the steering wheel is required is there any advice on the procedure and the ultimate fix.

Thanks in advance

Verify that all the bulbs are working and if so, try a new flasher

Sounds good but the dumb question is "what and where is the flasher?" Does it require pulling the steering wheel?

It's a round thing with 2 wires going to it that should be under the dash on the driver's side.

Thanks Hammer Time. This may save me from pulling the steering wheel. I went to the J. C. Whitney site and got a picture of the thing but the description said nothing about where it was located.

Thanks again

1157 bulbs and sockets, Must be right. Almost no chance a 1978 they are good -- T

Usually the flasher is located in the cabin under the dash on the fuse panel. A 1978 Ford will likely use the same flasher for hazzards and blinker. One way to locate it is to listen for it if it flashes at all. It is a relay and the sound you hear that corresponds to the blinking of the lights, is the relay making and breaking the circuit.

I will be looking for the thing tomorrow. It has the odd round shap so it should be easy to find.

As far as blinker and hazzard lights, J. C. Whitney indicates that each has its own breaker. I haven't even tried the emergency flasher lights. Thats the first thing I'll do after locating the blinker flasher gadget.

Thanks

You guys are great.
