1971 dart swinger no brake lites or turn signals

1971 dart swinger no brake lites or turn signals Sign In

Hi guys,
Hopefully someone out there can help me out. I have a 71 dart swinger and am having problems with the lites. I have side marker lites,running lites, and headlites but no brake or turns.
I have checked all grounds and fuses ,replaced lites,new turn signal switch,I'm confused.
Please give me direction on where to go from here.

Mustang; My data base doesn't go back far enough for me to tell you for sure, but if memory serves (yeah, rightUnsure), the turn and brake lights go through the turn signal switch. Maybe, one of the other old pharts in here will jump in...

PirateLoren,
I've went as far as replacing the steering coulmn with a different turn signal switch even, Are those really sensitive , because it looks like theres not much to them. I was hoping any other Mopar Head has run acrossed this. You guys have helped me in the passed so I'am keeping the faith in you.

The brake light switch and the turn signal switch are the only 2 major players in this circuit so since you have already replaced them, your just going to have to follow the circuit testing for where your losing the power. It could be a wiring issue somewhere but unfortunately, diagrams for that year aren't readily available.

Here are a couple diagrams that I had sitting on the shelves; where I got them from I don’t remember? LOL
The quality of the image isn’t the best; my scanner has lived here in the shop since it was new and it’s not the best environment for this kind of stuff.
I think you’ll be able to make out the text though?
Hope it helps.

Try and find the power sources to the switches.
The diagram can be a bit confusing; one of the power feeds to the directional switch changes colours a few times as it goes too and or through splices, connectors and flasher unit.
Lets trace the one feed and you’ll see what I mean.
Starting at the fuse panel (Dart 1 diagram); third fuse from the bottom. There’s a red TR wire (TR means tracer, a different coloured stripe on the red wire) a pink wire shares the fuse; what or where the pink wire does or goes; I haven’t bothered to look yet.. The red TR goes to a splice (Dart 2 diagram); leaving the splice the feed now is a white wire. This white wire goes to a connector (bottom Dart 1) where you’ll see a black wire attached; this black wire is now the feed wire going to the directional flasher (Center right Dart 1). Now a red wire leaves the flasher and goes to the directional switch (Dart 2). See what I mean the feed/power wire changes colours a few times.

One note I want to make if you find that there is power on the black wire going to the flasher but no power on the red leaving the flasher; doesn’t necessarily mean the flasher is bad. It might be; but depending on whether the flasher is a normal duty or heavy duty; is whether the flasher is open or closed at rest. A light duty flasher at rest is closed making a connection; a heavy duty flasher at rest is open, no connection. Once the signal switch is tripped (turned on; left or right) completing the circuit, allowing current flow. Then the flasher will feel the current flow (heat) and it will begin to click/ flash.

One last suggestion; print these two diagrams; trim off the boarder and then tape them together. Makes it a lot easier to trace the wires.
