1951 Olds electrical problem	Sign In

My 1951 Olds 88 keeps shutting down while driving. dash gauges, radio etc all go dead and the engine stops. The car then will not start- (Its the same as if I turned the ignition off). The cars starter will still turn over but Engine will not start. A few minutes late the car will start but then shut down a few minutes later. I checked all the wiring, grounds, etc but see nothing wrong. Can someone tell me what to look for on my '51 Olds, 6 volt, v/8 car- 36,000 orig miles.

Your going to have to start out buy testing for power at the + side of the coil when this is happening. If none, then test for power coming out of the ignition switch. If you do have power, then you could have a coil shorting internally.

Wild guess: I thing the body of that coil which probably has a strap needs to ground to body of coil and could be the issue??

It is seem to me that your ignition switch /part of main switch/ is bad.
Also cable witch connecting body and ground terminal battery is suspect. Cause may be in rust bellow cable terminal and body. Solution is disassemble, eliminate rust, apply GRAFFITI grease bellow, and between, and over all parts.
