07 durango "brake" message on dash

07 durango "brake" message on dash

I have an 07 durango with 100k miles on it. I live on a bumpy gravel road. Most days when I am driving up hill to my home the "brake" message pops up on the dash along with a ding tone. I have not tried to repair the problem yet but I am wondering if the primary braking system can trigger that message or is it only the e-brake? When I apply the e-brake the brake message does appear on the dash as I assume it should. I did check the brake fluid level in the master cylender and it is o.k. I have seen the message when I am driving down a paved road but that happens much less frequently. I did try to look for a fault code but as soon as I turn off the engine the message goes away and no code is saved. any ideas?

Not sure when that warning should show if for regular service brakes or parking brake which showed it's a drum brake inside rear rotor. Those stink! If same warning for either with master cylinder full I'd look and look anyway at those dang rear shoes and hardware. They might be full of junk either dirt or rust and some really like just a quick drag to clean up shoe to drum surface as they really only get used while still - just static friction.
Cables should be free and snap back tight. If you almost never use them they do get bad at least some around me with salted roads for ice and snow but any lack of use can be causing problems with that type.
No matter what don't ignore that warning till it's found and fixed,
