RUNNING DOWN THE ROAD, AND THE CAR SHUTS DOWN!
PROBLEM
I bought this 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS with 2.2 engine and auto transmission for my wife.
After a couple of weeks it started giving us trouble. I would be driving down the road and the car would shut down and the on-board computer readout on the dash would say "ENGINE POWER REDUCED." I being a decent DIY'SELFER began diagnosing the problem and came up with nothing. The car after runing for a while would continue to do the same thing, after cool down it would run again, or sometimes after checking the underhood fusebox and making sure that all relays were in tight and fuses were not blown it would start back up. One night while going to pick up my wife from work the car went down and would not start back up. we towed it home and I began an electrical search for the problem. I found that the Powertrain relay and the Crank/Run relay were burned out, so I replaced them and the car started right up. A couple of days later it did the same thing to me again. I checked the relays and they were loose in their ports. I took a really good look at the fusebox itself and found that the box had heat damage and was melting in the area of those two(2) relays.
SOLUTION
I replaced the box and three(3) wires that the connectors were badly corroded. since then the car has been running good. However,
QUESTION
I have noticed that the relays in the underhood fusebox are getting extremely hot during operation of the vehicle.
IS THIS NORMAL? CONCERNED!!!Crazy

You need a high end scan tool to even start to diagnose this. There is an error occurring in the "drive by wire" system and there will be stored trouble codes to give you a starting point but this isn't a DIYer diagnostic.

Hi HammerTime
Thanks for the heads up, however, I have a scan tool but no dtc's. I would have responded sooner but don't get on the comp. as much as I would like between the wife and kids.
The car has been running great since replacing the fusebox and 3 wires. My only concern now is the hot relays.

You don't have a real scan tool. That generic code reader isn't going to cut it.

What are these relays for that are getting hot?

The relays are to Powertrain, Crank/Run, A/C, Fuel pump, basically they are all getting hot but the hottest are powertrain and crank/run.

Relays get hot because they carry current. the more current they carry and the longer they stay on, the hotter they get.
