I have a 2004 Mazda Tribute. The seat heater on the passenger side sometime comes on be itself when the car is started. Usually there is a passenger in the seat. But on rare occasion it has come on without a passenger (may be more often - without a passenger it's hard to know). This has happened since the car was brand new. At first, I was told passengers were setting the heater on by hitting the button with their leg. But the button is quite recessed and it has since then been observed being on without a passenger. It has been to shop repeatedly. Supposedly had the seat heater control boards replaced (both front seats). But it still does it. Anyone else have this happen?

The passenger seat heater is controlled by a heated seat control module (processor). If the heater is activated only after or during starting of the vehicle, I would be looking for voltage spikes in the ignition power feed for the module during cranking or starting. It's possible a voltage spike could cause the processor to turn on the heater without pressing the button. If the power and ground circuits for the module are clean, I would disconnect the switch and see if the module still turns on the heater by itself. If it does, probably would replace the module.
