If that is .0004 VDC and you are checking this with the ECM fuse installed and your probe at the connector terminal for the orange wire at the alternator and the black probe on the negative battery terminal. You don't have any power sitting there.

You have power at the fuse, so you have to have a wiring problem. You stated you ohm checked the orange wire from the fuse box to the alternator connector and had 0.64 ohms. That means the wire has continuity or has a path for current to flow through.

Something isn't right in the readings. Is this an auto scaling meter or do you have to manual set it to different scales?

0.064 was on the dead side of 10a slot the hot side had a 0.000

Plug the fuse back in. Take a small paper clip and stick it into the back of the connector on the orange wire terminal. Plug the connector back in. This is called back probing. If you have some extra small gauge wire laying around, cut a piece long enough to reach the paper clip and the fuse box at the ECM fuse.

Touch one end of the wire to the fuse where you checked for power. Take the other end and touch it to the paper clip with the engine running. With your meter at the battery terminals, see if the alternator comes alive.

Just be careful and not let the ends of the bypass wire or paper clip touch anything. Just running a temp bypass to see if the orange wire is indeed open.

I'm back. Itried that test and cannot get a reading. What else can I do?

Ohm check the fuse and make sure that it has 0.0 ohms.

You have to get battery voltage to the orange wire terminal in the connector. Something isn't jiving. You may have to pierce the wire just before it goes into the connector with a small pin and test for voltage.

What is confusing me is that you don't have battery voltage to the connector and you have battery voltage at the fuse, but your wire is showing continuity. Either your meter is messed up, your reading it wrong, or some magical wormhole has opened up under your hood and is sucking the voltage from the wire...LOL.

LOL...could be all of the above...working on my sons car is not my specialty...I'm just a teacher at a prison. Learning something new everytime I talk to ya. I am going out to check this and I will be back in a minute....MAGIC WORMHOLE>>>>LMAO

I re-did the wire and the back probing...still nothing. The readings are 12.3V on battery and fuse box and nothing changes when I do the back probe. I changed the paper clip out and went to a small wire strong enough to puncture the insulation but I cannot tell if it has a good connection or not. It is in such a tight area, I can barely get to it.

There might be a problem with the terminal in the connector. That is why you could check for power at the wire itself before it goes into the connector to see if that is the case. Still don't understand why your ohm meter is showing continuity though.

The female terminal inside the connector that you plug into the back of the alternator.

What did you probe with your meter to check for voltage for the orange wire circuit?

directly into the orange wire coming out of the bundle from the alternator and the other probe was in the empty 10A fuse slot...on positive side of fuse slot the reading was 0.00 ohms and the reading from the dead side of the fuse slot was 0.64 ohms.

I just double checked the back probe again and I was able to get the wire pushed all the way into the orange wire of the connector. I turned the engine on and set the meter to volts and placed it on the battery terminals (reading 11.9V)...I then took the other end of the bypass wire and touched it to the 10A fuse...no change. I removed the fuse and touched the wire directly to the fuse slot itself and still no change...reading still 11.9V

*Unplug the alternator connector
*Plug the fuse in
*Have someone hold the one end of jumper wire on the fuse.
*Take the meter black lead and put it on the negative battery post
*Take the meter red lead and touch it to the other end of the jumper wire.
*Make sure you see battery voltage


*If it has battery voltage, connect that end to to the paper clip without shorting to anything.
*Take the red meter lead and touch it to the terminal inside the connector.
* You should see battery voltage

I will have to run this test tomorrow and get back with you...I have no one to hold wires in place. Working alone tonight. What would be a good time to get back on to give you the results tomorrow? I get home from work at 4.

Anytime in the evening. It's possible that you may have more than one problem.

One problem you have to solve is figuring out why you don't have battery power in the alternator connector on the orange wire terminal. If running a bypass to get voltage to the orange sensing circuit doesn't fire up the alternator, then we have to figure out if the PCM is seeing the current flow and controlling the voltage output for the regulator.

The first thing is getting sensing voltage for the alternator to the connector for sure.

My Uncle returned from trip and started working on car. Orange wire is hot. First of all, orange wire does have power from the ecm. Now, Have acquired charging system schematic from library, also acqired haynes service manual with wiring diagram. This vehicle has five wires total on the back of the alternator: 1 thick wire (battery stud), alternator plug, one blue, one orange, one gray, one pink wires. Not sure which one would be the one to excite the field. Believe it is either gray or pink and hyundai wiring schematic shows those wires come from power train control module. Haynes manual shows only 3 wires for the alternator...hot wire, orange then green. I think possibly the problem could be power control module needs repair??? Ran test removed pre-excitation resistor checked 12 v in direction with diode. Showed .3 v after resistor started to feel warm while holding it. Think this is okay???? Any ideas or suggestions.....thanks

Ok, so the regulator sensing wire (orange) has battery voltage on it. Was your meter wacky? What happened?

Since you have automatic transmission, the PCM monitors the current change from the output on the pink wire (FR) on the back of the alternator. The PCM uses that information in order to control the alternator's output. It does this by pulse width modulating the regulator to ground on the blue wire (G). Like turning a light switch on and off really fast it can control the amount of current the alternator puts out.

If you ground the blue wire with the engine running, that will full field the alternator causing it to go full output. That is basically how the alternator is tested to see if it is good or not.

The problem is that it is difficult to tell if the PCM is modulating the (G) unless you have something that can monitor the waveform of the voltage being toggled to ground. It happens too fast for a multimeter. You usually need an oscilloscope or graphing multimeter to make a determination if the PCM is doing it's job. The PCM also has to see the signal from the regulator on the (FR). PCM can't control the alternator output if it doesn't have the information from the regulator.

Without that kind of test equipment, the only thing that you can do is check the wiring from the alternator to computer to be sure that you don't have a wiring problem. If the wiring checks good between the alternator and the PCM, it's possible there is a problem with the PCM.
