03 Mustang GT new bat & alt; bat light still on Sign In

03 Mustang GT with 4.6L engine.

We replaced the old almost dead battery and the new one has been checked and re-checked. We replaced the alternator, which was bad, and the new one has been checked and re-checked. On the meter, the output is steady as a rock.

The problem is that the battery light on the dash will not turn off.

Any suggestions?

What is the charging voltage at idle with no accessories on?

The charging voltage at idle with everything off was 14.4 V. I don't know what it would be if we ran the car awhile.

After replacing the alt. we started the car several times and then put a big load on the battery to test it, so I'm assuming the charging voltage would drop down once the battery is fully charged.

There was very little change in voltage from idle to 3000 RPM.

That voltage is fine. If the light is on at that reading, then there is a problem with either the internal voltage regulator or the wiring to the dash cluster.

The Lt Green/red wire from the alternator to the dash could be grounded somewhere.

The yellow wire right at the plug on the alt. looked pinched, but dark and cold got us before I could check continuity. I thought if there was an open or short at the field connection, there would be no output.

I'm confused. My natural state most of the time.

I think my buddy got a bad alternator out of the box. I asked him to check it before he left the parts house, but they said they didn't have the right harness to check this particular alternator.

So now we're going to remove it to have it checked with the right harness wherever we have to go.

I'll be back to post the results.

Thanks
