This has flip up glass and tailgate that goes down - right? Is the tailgate a composite or metal? These things that move frequently use contact buttons instead of hard wired - at least the slightly older barn door type did that and if like that they must make good contact. If like that make sure they are clean. Gate may need to be adjusted tighter and or ground still isn't enough. Test that with a test light in reverse meaning power to common test light's alligator clip then what you touch with prick end on ground would light it. They put ground straps all over vehicles and when you get way back there it may not make it from one up front so test. The wiper module monitors a window fully closed switch, along with “lift gate ajar” switches (left & right sides). If any of the three switches, do not close the module will not allow the wiper motor to operate. And as Tom said the contactors on the glass need to be clean and tightly touching when all is closed.
