01 VW Golf 1.4 Unstable Voltage Sign In

Hi, I`ve replaced my battery with a new one about one week ago. My previous one gave up on me while I was driving at 60 km/h. The new one got the car running again with the battery indicator not showing anything. When I stopped 15 minutes later to throw away the old battery, the indicator lighted up again as I started the car.

After asking around and reading from the net it seemed to be the alternator, but I`m not completely sure. Today I ran some tests with the multimeter and it would would be great if some of you could interpret it. I`ve got an analogue multimeter and I`m not completely sure how to read it, but here goes:
-When the car was of and I had the meter on 25 DC it would go very close to half, which would be about 12,5 is my guess.
-When I turn the power on, but not the engine, it will fall off just a bit but be completely stable and the radio and lights will operate 100%. The battery indicator will be red, and I noticed in the engine room but not inside the car something will beep for about five seconds.
-When I turn the engine on (it starts without a problem) the engine will rev up and down and the multimeter goes from about less than a quarter to something close to half (maybe 11 volts) back and forth about every half a second.

Anyone kind enough to say what`s likely going on with my car? Please ask if you need more info.

Regards
HÃ¥kon

Check the voltage at the power cable coming out of the alternator. If it reads the same as the battery does while running, replace the alternator.

Thanks, seems like the logical thing to do. I`ll try to find it.
