rover car radio problem

I have a Rover 25 car on an 02 plate, which i've had for three years i am trying to enter the radio code which i have double confirmed with the dealer i bought the car from that it is correct. The handbook tells you to press the pre set button 1 then use the + or - buttons to enter the codes and to confirm the correct code each time using the pre set button 1. When i follow the instructions it doesn't work all it does is to display the code on the screen. Have you experienced a similar problem or do you know how to resolve this problem. The handbook also states that if you enter an incorrect code it will give a wait message, this doesn't appear either.
