Vehicle info: 1997 Toyota Corolla, about 140,000 miles The radio in our 1997 Corolla sometimes refuses to turn on. This is the original radio that came with the car. When the engine is off and the radio is running off the battery, it always works. But when the engine is on, it often doesn't turn on, although occasionally it does (it seems to be random). So it seems to be a contact problem, not a problem with the radio itself. What can we do to fix this and have the radio works consistently? Thanks a lot for your help.

You need to verify the power at the ignition hot wire while this isn't working. If it has the proper voltage, backpin the ground wire and run a jumper straight to battery ground. If the radio works like a charm, you have a bad ground. If not, you have a bad radio.

Just don't jumper the wrong wire to ground. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You need a wiring diagram of your stereo. You unplug the connector and use a 12v test light to check for power at the battery constant wire with the key off, the Ign hot wire key on, and if you have it there you plug the connector back in, backprobe the harness at the ground wire pin (paper clip works good for that) and jump that directly to battery ground. If the stereo works you know you have a ground issue. If no power on your power tests post back and we go from there
